Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Closure of Welling Branch Surgery
Introduction:
We are currently consulting on the proposed closure of the Welling branch surgery. This is a live document, which will be updated regularly as new questions arise and as we have more information to share. Please check back frequently for the latest updates.
1. Why is the Welling branch surgery closing?
The decision to close the Welling branch has been made after careful consideration. The Integrated Care Board (ICB) has withdrawn funding for the premises, making it financially unsustainable to continue operating. Consolidating services at our main site in Plumstead will ensure that we can continue to deliver high-quality, sustainable care to all our patients.
2. When will the Welling branch close?
The proposed closure date to be confirmed, subject to approval from the ICB. We will keep all patients fully informed as the process progresses.
3. What will happen to my registration?
You do not need to take any action. All registered patients will remain with The Waverley Practice and continue to receive care from the same doctors, nurses, and staff at our main site in Plumstead (37 Waverley Crescent, SE18 7QU).
4. Will the same services be available?
Yes. All services currently offered at the Welling branch will continue to be provided at the main surgery in Plumstead. Patients will still have access to face-to-face, telephone, and online consultations, as well as home visits where appropriate.
5. How can I travel to the Plumstead surgery if I live near the Welling branch?
Patients can reach the Plumstead surgery easily using public transport.
• Take the bus number 51 from Central Avenue/Wickham Street (Stop N)
Towards Plumstead Common / The Ship.
• The bus journey takes around 9 minutes, followed by a 6-minute walk to
The Waverley Practice, 37 Waverley Crescent, Plumstead Common.
• The total journey time is approximately 16 minutes, and bus 51 runs
Regularly throughout the day.
There is also ample parking, including disabled parking, at the Plumstead site
Should you wish to drive, a journey of approximately 1.4 miles, taking 6 minutes.
6. Will patients who are housebound continue to receive home visits?
Yes. Patients who are housebound or have mobility difficulties will continue to receive home visits where clinically appropriate. We are committed to ensuring that all vulnerable patients continue to receive the care they need.
7. What if I have mobility or transport difficulties?
We understand that travel can be challenging for some patients. We are currently in discussion with a local taxi company to help provide accessible transport options for patients who may require assistance. Home visits will continue to be offered where clinically appropriate.
8. What if I prefer to register with a different GP practice?
Patients who wish to register elsewhere are free to do so. Our staff will provide full support and guidance to help you register with another practice if that is your preference.
9. How will you support vulnerable or elderly patients?
We will pay particular attention to our elderly, disabled, and safeguarding patients to ensure that no one is disadvantaged. Home visits and continuity of care will continue to be provided as usual.
10. Will any staff lose their jobs?
No. All staff currently working across both sites will continue to be employed by The Waverley Practice. Their roles will simply be consolidated at the main surgery in Plumstead.
11. How will patients be kept informed?
We will communicate updates through letters, text messages, our website, and notices displayed at both sites. Information will also be shared with local pharmacies and community partners to ensure patients are fully aware of the changes.
12. What are the benefits of this change?
By bringing all services under one roof, we can:
• Provide a wider range of clinical and support services.
• Improve efficiency and teamwork.
• Create better facilities for patients and staff.
• Ensure the long-term financial stability of the Practice.
